Yankees.com: Errors hurt Phelps in St. Louis homecoming

ST. LOUIS -- David Phelps waited 27 years to finally play at Busch Stadium, and it took just one inning to spoil it.

Three St. Louis hits and two New York errors in the third inning on Tuesday were enough for the Cardinals, who scored four runs in the frame and shut down the Yankees' offense to cruise to a 6-0 victory in front of 45,202 at Busch Stadium.

Phelps, a native of Florissant, Mo., who grew up 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis, worked out of trouble in the first inning. After he allowed a single and a walk with two gone, he forced catcher Yadier Molina to roll over on a slider, forcing a grounder to end the inning.

He wouldn't be so lucky in the third.

Three of the first four hitters he faced in the inning reached base, with a ground-rule double from Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams driving in the first run of the game. An intentional walk loaded the bases, and from there the inning fell apart.

With two strikes, Phelps got Cardinals right fielder Allen Craig to hit a two-seamer on the ground to shortstop Derek Jeter, who fired to first baseman Kelly Johnson. Johnson, filling in for the second consecutive day for the injured Mark Teixeira, tagged Craig but dropped the ball. The run had already scored, but the bases remained loaded with just one retired.

The next batter, Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta, hit a grounder to Brian Roberts at second. Roberts ran in on the ball but watched it roll under his glove to center, allowing two more to score.

Phelps worked out of the inning, but the damage was done.

I thought the Yankees dumped Nun-E?

No power slap hitters that rely on speed and have great defense? We love those guys. It's the new market inefficiency. Now they just have to flex their financial muscles to figure out a way of letting up -1 runs because they clearly aren't scoring any.

RAB had the first error as: "Derek Jeter‘s throw pulled Kelly Johnson off first base. The error went to Johnson because I guess they’re not allowed to give Jeter errors in his final season. Coming off the bag to make the catch and apply the tag was the routine part of that play, apparently." Kinda different than the above.

Early All Star voting results are out.

Jeter leads AL SS.
Ellsbury would be the last OFer voted it, 3rd in votes.
Beltran is right behind him, 4th in AL OFers.
McCann is 2nd amoung AL catchers.

Jeter's favorite movies in order American History X, Major League, Shawshank Rebellion and The Five Heartbeats. I think Roger Ebert's and Pauline Kaels places in film history are secure.

That's a good curse, that's a professional job. I always say, whatever you're having done, go to an expert. It pays in the long run.
