LoHud: Monument Park to add Torre, Gossage, Martinez and O’Neill plaques

The New York Yankees today announced that Class of 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee Joe Torre, Hall of Famer Rich “Goose” Gossage, Tino Martinez and Paul O’Neill will all be honored with plaques in Monument Park. Torre will also have his uniform No. 6 retired. The ceremonies are part of a recognition series that will include Bernie Williams in 2015.

I don't really have a problem with the Yankees loading up Monument Park with plaques. And let's face it, this is as much a ploy to try and increase their sagging attendance numbers as anything else, so it's pure business. But the Yankees probably need to stop retiring numbers at some point.

The O'Neill plaque will be conveniently located above the water cooler.

I gave my thoughts in the other thread already. Some of these names seem like too much. How do you give it to O'Neill and Tino and not a lot of others who probably don't deserve it.

After Jeter, is there a player on the current team or in the farm system who you imagine someday being honored with a Monument Park plaque?
